According to history, Mayurbhanj has its distinct identity as a royal state with a well-known cultural legacy and age-old handloom traditions. Women could potentially able to acquire enduring employment possibilities through hand spinning. The hand spinning craft has been passed down through generations, and the remote tribal women in this area have a strong bond with it. Recognizing the immense potential of these women, and to empower them with sustainable earning through their journey of entrepreneurial endeavor and leadership; Udala weaving cluster, Mayurbhanj was established beneath SFURTI i.e., a flagship program of MoMSME with the guidance of KIIT-TBI as the Technical Agency and Maunadhwani Foundation as Implementing Agency.
Interestingly, Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, had a very firm opinion on handlooms and held a quite enthusiastic view about their role in the economy of the country. Gandhiji perceived two things of great importance in handloom – the fabric of the nation; the heritage of a great country like India. He envisaged tremendous variety and scope in the craft of weaving and associated craftsmanship. He also foresaw its excellent employment potential and a means to mitigate the existing rural poverty.
To give tribute to this thought of Mahatma Gandhi, Udala weaving cluster celebrated Gandhi Jayanti on October 2nd in a splendid manner. The event was successfully completed through paying homage to the father of nation by the SPV members and CDE.
