Based out at Udala block of Mayurbhanj district, the Udala Palmarosa Cluster comprises both of land holding tribes and beneficiaries from landless families. The Udala Palmarosa Cluster is one of the potential clusters considered to be developed under the cluster mode of the SFURTI scheme. The cluster is traditionally an agrarian economy where majority of the population are tribal farmers. Before the project intervention, the farmer beneficiaries only cultivated the traditional crops like wheat and paddy. Such cultivation did not bring much income to the beneficiaries and hence, the farmers kept pushing below the poverty line. Switching over to the cultivation of lemon grass was the first step that the cluster took to revamp its economic and social conditions. Today they are engaged in growing lemon grass and palmarosa in a total area of 500 acres. The strong fragrance of the grasses prevents intrusion of wild animals to the field and hence the total produce reaches the CFC for production without any loss.
The cost of aromatic grass cultivation is also low as compared to the traditional crops. The farmer beneficiaries do not have to replenish the land for next cultivation rather the crops will start growing again from the stalks after cutting of grass every time. Prior to the intervention, aromatic grass was harvested and sent to nearest distillation unit which is 50-60 km away and then it was sold to traders after product processing. However, facilitation of the CFC has generated employment and income to the farmers
Today they enjoy a fourfold increase in their income. The cluster has a far reaching vision in promoting the lives and livelihoods of not only its beneficiaries but also the local youths, who are engaged in different post-harvest activities in the distillation units. The cluster has made tremendous achievement in its predetermined objectives. The beneficiaries have been imparted training on enterprise development and usage of latest advanced technologies. The cluster has tied up with Pure Petal Alliance Pvt. Ltd and H & H Natural Agro Enterprises for marketing of their products under the brand name of “Orak”. The cluster has paved the way for promotion of entrepreneurs at grass-root level and has created a platform for the tribal beneficiaries to achieve a better standard of living.
