Situated in the multi-ethnic district of Churachandpur, Lamka is home to hundreds of tribal farmers who carry out their livelihood by practising agriculture. Spices like Turmeric, Ginger and Chilly are grown extensively in the area. Endowed with good land texture, the soil of the cluster area stands suitable for growing these crops on a higher scale. The farmers use traditional ways of cultivation to produce the spice crops which are eco-friendly and less expensive. Since most of the farmers are illiterate and have little exposure to the market, they get exploited in the hands of middlemen, who purchase their produce at a very low price. To add up to their burdens, factors like poor technology and financial issues play a significant role in decreasing the scope of their existing business. The intervention of SFURTI scheme in the cluster has come out as a potential game changer in the lives of these tribal farmers. The scheme has a generous aim to develop the cluster in all aspects and make them self-sufficient on social and economic platforms.
The funds under the scheme have enabled the farmers to produce various products from ginger, turmeric and oleoresins with better technology and financial support. The scheme also makes provision for better marketing linkages for their products in national and international forums which enhances their scope for business expansion and livelihood management as well.
The Oleoresin market is expected to grow globally due to its extensive use in the food and beverages sector and it has high demand in the pharmaceutical industry as well. The cluster will connect in B2B channels on trade portals like Trade India, India Mart etc. The cluster has turned to be an example for many backward traditional industries in NER. It has paved a way to create more eco-friendly business in the same area.
