KIIT-TBI Pioneers “Incubation of Handicrafts Artisans” Bootcamp A move to promote entrepreneurial growth

Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to revitalizing and empowering the handicrafts sector, KIIT-Technology Business Incubator (KIIT-TBI) proudly hosted the inaugural edition of its highly anticipated Bootcamp ― ‘Incubation of Handicrafts Artisans’ on 26th March 2025 at its state-of-the-art premises. This groundbreaking initiative was designed to assist artisans from a diverse range of craft sectors including Applique, Hand Painting, Ceramics, and Filigree in navigating the transformative journey from skilled artisans to successful entrepreneurs.

The event was graced by the presence of several esteemed dignitaries, including Shri Samarendra Sahu, Advisor at KIIT-TBI; Kumar Premendra Sinha, Handicraft Promotion Officer; Shri Gurukrushna Mohanty, National Award-Winning Master Artisan, and a distinguished gathering of over 72 artisans, along with their mentors and master craftsperson. The program kicked off with a warm and engaging welcome address by Ms. Subhasmita Sahoo, Assistant Manager at KIIT-TBI, who expertly set the tone for the day’s insightful discussions. Following her address, Shri Samarendra Sahu took the stage to deliver a comprehensive and educative session, elaborating on the boot camp’s core objective of identifying and training artisans through a structured program focused on both skill enhancement and business support.

Drawing from the insights of industry experts, he highlighted how this incubation initiative was crafted to not only commercialize artisanal skills but also address financial barriers by incorporating a flexible training model. Shri Sahu outlined a detailed curriculum that includes stipends, expert mentorship, and exposure visits, all supported by the Development Commissioner’s office. With confidence in the program’s potential, he emphasized Odisha’s untapped talent and urged artisans to adopt a collective growth model drawing inspiration from Gujarat’s success. Concluding his address, he reassured the audience of strong government backing, calling this initiative a stepping stone for future projects, such as developing a seashell craft cluster in Puri, Odisha.

Building upon the impactful address by Shri Sahu Sir, Kumar Premendra Sinha emphasized the widespread presence of handicrafts in Odisha and the pivotal role of KIIT-TBI in nurturing artisan entrepreneurship. He highlighted the importance of soft skills, processing, packaging, and marketing to enhance value addition and competitiveness. Recognizing KIIT-TBI’s model as a blueprint for India, he urged collaboration among stakeholders to create a sustainable handicraft ecosystem aligned with government initiatives. Whereas, Shri Gurukrushna Mohanty, reflecting the artisan’s vision, discussed the impact of government intervention on livelihoods and the importance of artisans’ satisfaction with their creations. He emphasized KIIT-TBI’s role in fostering innovation and sustainability within the craft sector. At the later part of the session, Experts and resource persons also chipped in to elaborate on the initiative’s focus on craft processing, design, and artisan development, pointing out the vast potential of Odisha’s handicrafts.

Interestingly, they also noted the sector’s challenges, including skill gaps, marketing linkages, and the need for financial literacy and innovation. Despite high global demand for handmade products, the craft sector struggles due to issues like the artisan-entrepreneur gap, declining craft villages, and inadequate marketing strategies. While digital platforms offer new opportunities, the preservation of traditional art forms remains a key priority.

As a sustainable move, Shri Sahu Sir urged the artisans to also partake in the discussion and share their thought process. Responding positively, the artisans shared their experiences, highlighting the dedication and skill involved in their craft. They discussed challenges such as sourcing materials, adapting to market trends, and preserving traditional techniques.

Many expressed pride in their work, emphasizing its cultural significance. While some spoke of difficulties in reaching broader markets, others appreciated the support from training programs and workshops that improved their skills and business opportunities. Their stories reflected both the hardships and the deep passion fuelling their craft.

At the closing ceremony, the esteemed dignitaries were honoured with mementoes in recognition of their valuable contributions and support. Mr. Debashis Tripathy, Sr. Manager at KIIT-TBI and Project Coordinator of the incubation program, then delivered the concluding remarks, emphasizing the program’s forward prospects and its potential to create lasting value in the handicraft ecosystem.

Additionally, he hinted at the way forward to the next phase (Bootcamp-II), where skilled artisans will be selected to go through the extensive incubation program and a Performa regarding the same will be circulated soon in which artisans will share their credentials for the screening process.

The boot camp not only facilitated knowledge exchange but also laid the groundwork for future collaborations. With clear, actionable plans and a unified vision, KIIT-TBI and its partners are poised to transform the handicrafts landscape empowering artisans with the tools and opportunities needed to thrive in a competitive market. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Ms. Nibedita Khatua, KIIT-TBI, expressing gratitude to all the participants. This was followed by a networking session over high tea, where attendees continued to exchange ideas and build meaningful connections.
