The much-anticipated inauguration of the “Handicraft Artisans’ Incubation Programme” unfolded in resounding triumph on 11th August 2025 at the premises of KIIT Technology Business Incubator (KIIT-TBI), powered by the steadfast support of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. This pioneering initiative, devoted exclusively to empowering women artisans, focused on three of Odisha’s most celebrated crafts i.e., Appliqué, Hand Painting, and Ceramics (including Terracotta). With a visionary mission to transform traditional craftswomen into self-reliant innovation-driven entrepreneurs, the programme marks a momentous chapter in the history of Odisha’s handicrafts.


The ceremony was honoured by the esteemed presence of Sri Samarendra Sahu, Advisor, KIIT- TBI; Sri Rajesh Kumar Jha, Director, NIFT Bhubaneswar; Sri Premendra Kumar Sinha and Shri Veer Bharat Marandi, Handicraft Promotion Officers, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Adding to the aura of the occasion were the distinguished master artisans Guru Sri Maheswar Ojha (National Awardee in Stone Carving), Guru Kalpataru Maharana (National Merit Awardee in Stone carving) and Guru Krushnachandra Mohanty (State design Awardee in Appliqué), whose craftsmanship stands as a beacon of Odisha’s artistic heritage. The event was seamlessly orchestrated by KIIT-TBI and the project team, whose efforts ensured the programme’s flawless execution.
The proceedings commenced with a warm welcome address by Ms. Nibedita Khatua, setting a gracious tone for the day. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp representing a timeless symbol of knowledge and enlightenment and the presentation of floral bouquets to the honoured guests. In his inaugural address, Sri Samarendra Sahu eloquently reflected on how the Handicraft Artisans’ Incubation Programme aligns with visionary goals for the craft sector. He underscored the pivotal role of innovation, market orientation, and entrepreneurial leadership in fortifying Odisha’s artisan ecosystem. Emphasizing that this initiative would instill confidence and broaden the horizons of artisans to thrive in contemporary markets, he also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the resource persons and the organizing team in bringing the programme to fruition.


Whereas, the role of government facilitation in building a robust handicraft ecosystem was underlined by Sri Premendra Kumar Sinha and Shri Veer Bharat Marandi, who stated that such initiatives accelerate artisan integration into competitive markets while ensuring cultural preservation. Sri Rajesh Kumar Jha highlighted the importance of merging traditional aesthetics with contemporary trends to help artisans capture both domestic and global audiences. He stated that the incubation programme acts as a bridge between heritage and enterprise, ensuring that traditions are preserved while sustainable livelihoods are created. Complimenting that, Master artisans Guru Kalpataru Maharana and Guru Krushnachandra Mohanty hailed the programme as a golden opportunity for artisans to integrate modern approaches into their craft, fostering sustainable growth.
Chief Guest Guru Maheswar Ojha also shared his inspiring journey in the handicraft sector, urging participants to view each creation not only as a work of art but also as a business asset, and to fully embrace the training for entrepreneurial success.
Mr. Debashis Tripathy, Project Leader, then introduced the distinguished panel of resource persons who will be key components to the success of the program. The versatile resource group included Mr. Sasank Patro (Founder, Sabhyasha), who highlighted the importance of Brand positioning and retail partnerships. partnerships. Mrs. Pratiti Mohanty (Founder, Kalaveera), who shared valuable insights into the importance of Product diversification and design storytelling. Similarly, Ms. Sarada Mohapatra (Sarada Design Studio) educated the crowd on Prototyping and workshop management practices.


While, Dr. Anita Sabat (Utkalamrita) provided necessary outlines on Digital marketing and content creation. Meanwhile, CA Sandeep Sahu (Indian Villez) emphasized on the importance of proper Costing, pricing, and GST compliance and how it will stabilize the financial flows of the artisan. Last but not the least Mrs. Leesa Mohanty (Nirguna Foundation) shared her views on Sustainable and socially-driven business models that will empower the women artisans. Each resource person shared inspiring insights, urging the participating artisans to embrace entrepreneurial thinking, upgrade their craft with innovation, and explore untapped market opportunities. A key highlight was the launch of the Artisans’ Handbook, a bilingual (English & Odia) practical guide covering entrepreneurship, marketing, costing, design innovation, merchandising, and quality management. Each participant received a copy to support their entrepreneurial journey.
The event’s vibrancy was amplified by a captivating display of handcrafted masterpieces intricately stitched appliqué panels, hand-painted fabrics blending tradition and modernity, and finely crafted ceramic and terracotta pieces reflecting both the cultural depth of Odisha’s heritage and its vast potential for design-led innovation and premium market appeal.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Debashis Tripathy, who expressed gratitude to dignitaries, resource persons, and artisans for their active participation. In recognition of their valuable contributions, the esteemed guests were presented with mementoes.
