Churachandpur is one of the largest district, multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan city in the state of Manipur. It is considered to be one of the most potential cluster area focused on planting aromatic and medicinal products. The texture of land in the area is suitable for organic farming on a higher scale. Churachandpur being naturally endowed with fertile soil content, the essential oil produced from this region is much superior to the rest of India. The citral content is higher than 80%, which already has an international repute. But due to lack of connectivity, poor technology and finance, business from the aromatic grass cultivation was not able to flourish.
Through the intervention of the SFURTI scheme, the cluster was immensely supported to produce aromatic products. Since the global demand for essential oils is increasing drastically, it motivates the cluster to go ahead with such production. Currently, the cluster is engaged in producing essential oils like lemongrass and citronella, herbal liquid hand wash, herbal tea and fragrance cones. The farmer beneficiaries have been provided with adequate finance and modern technologies for better production.
The cluster has gone beyond their capability to market their products in domestic and international forums. They have partnered with various marketing agencies namely GeM (Government e Marketplace), Khadi Natural brand, Emami, Dabur etc. Moreover, Imphal is turning into a cosmopolitan commercial hub for selling organic products due to rise in demand of consumers. So the cluster receives a significant number of orders for its product.
The cluster has developed B2B channel on portals like Trade India, India Mart etc. The cluster has turned out to be a pathfinder for many backward traditional industries in the NER. The marketing strategy and operational framework of the cluster are an example for many such industries at their infancy.
